Cans & Boots

By Maurice Hill

Welcome to my hood where the river is runnin'

But all the kids treat it like liver and onions.

I want to take a swim but I would never really jump.

'Cause ~black folk~ don't like to ~back stroke~ in city dumps.

The soldiers hold their nose so they can't salute

Near a river that's overflowing with cans and boots.

I want to write to President Bush but it's a waste to mention.

How's he gonna pay for cleaning when he barely pays attention? We're supposed to be the Nation
